Fish paste sandwiches, blancmange, jelly and jam tarts were on the menu at Ilmington’s 1950’s tea party as the village got a head start on its
plans for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations next June.
Children from Ilmington School quizzed the older generation about life sixty years’ ago- and were fascinated by tales of National Service,
beehive hairdos, winkle pickers and the freedoms of playing in the countryside all day long.
The party was the beginnings of The Fifties, Ilmington Remembers - a twelve month major oral history and drama project funded by the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
In addition to providing material for a play, memories of the 1950’s will be compiled into a DVD, form part of a special website and be
archived by the county library.
