Ilmington Fifties Project
Ilmington has been awarded a grant from the National Heritage Lottery Fund for a major oral history and drama project to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The aim is to discover what life was like in the 1950’s for those living in the village, to record their stories and build on them to create a play which will be performed as part of the nationwide celebrations of Her Majesty’s succession to the throne in June next year.Fifties Event

The project will encompass a host of professional workshops open to all on music of the time, rock n’roll, costume, poetry and technical skills in sound and lighting, as well as work with Ilmington School and the involvement of young people in the village – alongside those who remember life 60 years’ ago.
Research for the oral histories begins next month, with filming scheduled throughout the summer. 50s ProjectIn addition to providing material for the play, memories of the 1950’s will be compiled into a film/DVD, form part of a special website and be archived by the county library.
Project Director Colin Edwards said that amongst other things the
grant would enable the 50s ProjectVillage Hall to benefit from new staging and
extra lighting, as well as provide Ilmington with a camera and sound and lighting equipment. ‘I hope the celebrations in June will also incorporate a vintage ‘hop’, an exhibition of memorabilia of the decade and lots of fun for everyone,’ he said.20:20
The project is being run under the auspices of Ilmington 20:20 Vision. Whether you lived in Ilmington or elsewhere during that time and have memories, pictures or items of interest from the 1950’s then please contact Colin Edwards or Wendy Nelson on 01608 682049
